ONE of Ireland’s longest married couple, Bill and Mary Hunt from Derrynalecka, Kilkelly, celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary last Friday, February 22.
They were in fine fettle when joined by family and friends for a get-together at home and raised a glass in honour of the occasion.
The war was on in Europe when Bill Hunt met Mary Lavin during the Christmas of 1943 in Willie Campbell’s dance hall in Midfield (now Julian’s). They didn’t hang around for too long and were married seven weeks later in Swinford Church.
They raised a family of four, two sons and two daughters. William and Michael reside in Derrynalecka, Josephine is in Dublin and Eileen is down in Tralee.
One of their grandchildren, Karen Hunt from Kilkelly, says they were in tip-top shape last Friday and were delighted to welcome to family and relations and friends who dropped by to wish them well.
“We had a grand get-together and it was a nice informal and relaxed occasion. They got lots of calls and good wishes and all the family are so proud of them on achieving this remarkable milestone … and they are still going strong,” said Karen.
