O'Connor on the brink of Mayo scoring record

O'Connor on the brink of Mayo scoring record

O'Connor needs four points against Tyrone to break Conor Mortimer's all-time Mayo scoring record

Mayo's clash against Tyrone could be a historic one for Mayo star Cillian O'Connor.

The Ballintubber man is within touching distance of Conor Mortimer's all-time scoring record for Mayo.

Three points in tomorrow's game will see O'Connor equal Mortimer's record, four will break it.

The achievement is all the more remarkable when you consider O'Connor is still only 25 years of age.

Mortimer broke Joe Corcoran's long standing record in 2012, when he scored 0-8 v Dublin in the rearranged league game in Castlebar.

Mortimer's inter-county career came to an end later that year. He clocked off with 14-388 to his name across league and championship since his debut in 2002.

It was a total of 430 points and O'Connor has steadily crept up to that total. As of now, he has scored 25-352 for Mayo in league and championship, a total of 427 points.

Joe Corcoran had been the long-time holder of the record with 19-360, a total of 417 points. O'Connor equalled and surpassed that number with his two points off the bench in Mayo's league defeat to Kerry in February.

In terms of games played O'Connor is ahead of his rivals too. Mortimer scored 14-388 in 99 games for Mayo; Corcoran his 19-360 in 96 games whereas tomorrow's game for Mayo will be O'Connor's 79th for the county.
