Fare dodgers fined

A CASTLEBAR woman charged with not having a train ticket while aboard a train and with giving false details has been fined a total of €800.
Castlebar District Court was told by Tom McNicholas from Irish Rail that he found Mary McDonagh of 16 The Willows, Castlebar, without a ticket on a train to Dublin on June 13, 2016. When the fixed penalty was explained to her, she gave the wrong name and address.
When Mr McNicholas said he would ring the Gardaí, Ms McDonagh provided the correct details.
The maximum fine for not paying the fixed penalty charge is €1,000. Judge Mary Devins convicted Ms McDonagh, and fined her €250 for each charge, plus €150 costs for each offence.
Meanwhile, two Castlebar residents were fined for incorrect tickets while on Irish Rail services.
On April 2, 2016, Kenneth Feeney of 25 Knockaphunta, Castlebar, was detected on a train at Castlebar though he only had a return ticket from Claremorris to Dublin. He received a €100 fine, and a €27 charge for the ticket, which went unpaid. He was subsequently fined €250, plus €150 costs.
Matthew Timlin of Apartment 12 Hawthorn Village, Castlebar, was detected on September 1, 2016, at Castlebar with a ticket that was only valid as far as Roscommon. Judge Devins fined him €250, plus €150 costs. None of three defendants were represented in court.
