Driver banned for three years for dangerous driving

A DRIVER whose dangerous driving saw him crash into another car with such force that it left the road and ended up on top of a wall has been disqualified from driving for three years.
Paul Quinn of Killasser, Swinford, appeared before Castlebar District Court to face sentencing for dangerous driving at Shanvalley, Kiltimagh, on July 31, 2016. The incident occurred when he drove his Volkswagen Passat into another vehicle, propelling it into the air before it landed on a wall.
Judge Mary Devins commented that someone could have been killed or paralysed.
“Young people and cars and speed is a classic lethal cocktail, and unfortunately very common in Co Mayo,” she said.
The case came before the court earlier this year, and Mr Evan O’Dwyer, solicitor for Mr Quinn, said the wait for sentencing over the summer had been very sobering for his client. He said the thought of a custodial sentence had made him more grounded and that he was remorseful for what happened.
Mr O’Dwyer said his client was fully insured and there was no suggestion of alcohol. He added that he was available to do community service if he had to.
Judge Devins said she would not impose a custodial sentence but did impose a €1,000 fine and disqualified Mr Quinn from driving for three years.
