Woman dies after being struck by train in Straide

Woman was chasing her dog when struck by passing train

A woman has died after being hit by a train in Straide this morning.

The woman was killed after being struck by the Manulla to Ballina train at Straide at approximately 11.30am this morning.

The Mayo News understands the woman is from the locality and was walking her dog. Her dog broke free and she was chasing it when struck by the oncoming train.

Irish Rail are describing it as a 'tragic accident'. The woman's identify has not been released yet.

The Manulla Junction to Ballina service has been closed all day and replaced by a bus transfer from Claremorris to Ballina. Emergency services are still at the scene but the line is expected to reopen this evening.
