No fear of Babestation models catching their death

SKETCH Edwin McGreal casts a sideways glance at the day the Babestation babes came to town to make amends

KISSES IN THE COLD The Babestation models braved the west of Ireland weather to say sorry.

For those of you unfamiliar with the adult TV channel Babestation, it involves scantily clad women talking suggestively to viewers.
We swear we only discovered that this week in the course of our research for this story.
Some naïve people in Westport thought when the models arrived in the town on Thursday afternoon, they would be in a similar state of undress.
But, as people around these parts are wont to say, ‘they’d catch their death if they did’.
It was a cold and wet miserable Thursday on Westport’s Mall, and the media gathered with their heavy overcoats were feeling the pinch. No matter what the publicity, wearing a bikini would have been madness.
The models were due to dock at 1.30pm but they were running late. We wondered when they would arrive and the local traffic warden had news for us.
“They’ll be here at 4pm lads,” he told us with an air of authority. As someone who might need to be prepared for their arrival, we took him at his word before he followed up with a classic punchline.
“Yeah, they’ll be here at 4pm, I was talking to one of them last night at 5.15am!”
When we finished laughing, word broke they were not coming into the town at all and all media engagements would be at their hotel out in Aughagower.
There was an instant mutiny from the media – we would not go out to Aughagower; they had to come into the town. The photographers wanted the iconic shot over the Mall in the town and never likely to miss a good publicity opportunity, the Babestation entourage complied and were on the way back in.
Aside from the media who had a job to do there – honest! – there was only a smattering of locals. Some waited for two hours, whilst most just gave a passing glance.
When the models did arrive, some men emerged from the shadows and almost knocked journalists and cameramen out of their way – not an easy thing to do, believe me – to get the obligatory selfie.
One delivery driver who was pictured taking a selfie refused to tell a photographer his name for captioning purposes because he wants to keep a low profile. Too late buddy, you might just be in the national papers tomorrow.
The three models – Alexa Brooke, Priya Young and Vicky Narni – were amazed by the media interest in them.
“This is what Jennifer Lopez must feel like when she steps out of her car. We’ve been having a great time. We’ve felt like superstars since we got off the plane” Vicky told us in the Aughagower Country Lodge afterwards.
They got out of their jeep with umbrellas at which stage one of the photographers asked them to get rid of them for better shots.
“They don’t want to get wet,” one of their entourage replied.
The models reluctantly agreed but as they stood on The Mall bridge in Westport, they were perishing with the cold.
“Could you try to look a bit warmer girls,” one snapper requested. The models later said he was lucky he did not end up being thrown into the river.
Interviews followed, but they were cut short by the cold. The models adjourned to the warmer surroundings of the Aughagower Country Lodge for more.
The models said they were never more happy to see a warm fire as they finished their media obligations.
The station confirmed that they are changing their numbers so no residents in Westport should receive calls in error from now on. And tonight the models are planning on hitting the tiles in Westport. Three tourists Westport certainly was not expecting this time last week.
