Paul Fitzgerald, the son of an Irishtown couple who died in a suspected murder/suicide, remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital in Dublin.
Thirty-seven-year-old Fitzgerald suffered serious head injuries following an altercation on his family farm in Knockadoon, Irishtown which claimed the lives of his father Tom (74) and mother Kitty (72) on November 1.
When the Garda Armed Response Unit arrived at the family farm, they were met with Mr Fitzgerald who was tasered after he failed to comply with their directions.
He was rushed to University Hospital Galway before he was transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where he underwent emergency surgery for head injuries on November 2.
A Garda spokesperson said that Mr Fitzgerald remains in a ‘critical but stable’ condition in Beaumont Hospital and there has been no change in his condition since he was put in an induced coma.
The deaths of Tom and Kitty Fitzgerald shocked the local community and the circumstances of their deaths are not yet fully understood, as there were no other witnesses to the incident.
The alarm was initially raised by the girlfriend of Paul Fitzgerald who became concerned after she was unable to get in contact with him. It is understood she called to the house before contacting the emergency services.
The Garda spokesperson said the investigation was ongoing and asked anyone with any information to contact Claremorris Garda Station on 094 9372080.
