Ballaghaderreen-born architect dies on Nepal fund-raising trek
Michael Duffy
A WELL-known Dublin-based architect who was born in Ballaghaderreen has died while on a fund-raising trek for the Fighting Blindness charity in Nepal. Mr Aidan Kelly, from Ranelagh in Dublin, was 69 years old. Mr Kelly had been in Nepal since Sunday, October 21, and was part of a group of fund-raisers who were on a Mount Everest Camp trek when he began feeling tired. He returned to the team’s hotel base in Namche with a guide on Saturday, October 27, and had a full medical. Unfortunately Mr Kelly passed away in his sleep on Sunday night, October 28. “We were all very sorry to hear of Mr Kelly’s passing as we had all come to know him well here. He was a very fit man and had only recently returned from a trek in Peru. He had done a lot of valuable fund-raising for Fighting Blindness during the last number of years,” said Avril Daly, Head of Public Affairs of Fighting Blindness. Mr Kelly was predeceased by his wife Deirdre and is survived by his children Maeve, Diarmuid, Mahon and Hughie. Aidan’s father John was a native of Westport. His remains arrived back in Ireland on Monday and removal takes place this evening (Tuesday) from Fanagan’s Funeral Home on Aungier Street in Dublin to the Church of Mary Immaculate, Refuge of Sinners in Rathmines, arriving at 5pm. Funeral Mass will take place at 12 noon on Wednesday with burial afterwards in Mount Jerome Cemetery.
