A Dublin man who stole petrol from a Westport filling station told a court he did so because he lost his wallet
A DUBLIN man who drove off without paying for petrol has told a court that he did so because he had lost his wallet.
Jason Dunphy of 94, Decies, Ballyfermot, Dublin appeared before Westport District Court where he pleaded guilty to stealing €40 worth of petrol from Corrib Oil, Westport on September 22, 2014.
The court heard that at 9.30am on that date, a blue Volvo S40 pulled into the garage and Mr Dunphy filled €40 worth of petrol before driving off. The car was detected via CCTV.
Mr Dunphy, who has two previous convictions, told the court that he had lost his wallet and that is why he filled the car and drove off.
“I was going to go back and pay but the gardaí said not to go near it,” said Mr Dunphy.
Judge Mary Devins instructed Dunphy to pay €50 into court. He returned a time later with €40 and told the court it was all he had.
Judge Devins applied the benefit of the Probation Act.
