An Antrim man died on Sunday when his motorbike collided with a van outside Hollymount

A 55-year-old man died when the motorbike on which he was travelling was in a head-on collision with a van outside Hollymount on Sunday afternoon.
The Antrim native, who has been named as Robert Wright, was pronounced dead at the scene at Lehinch, Hollymount. His remains were brought to Mayo General Hospital, where a postmortem was to be arranged.
The collision occurred at approximately 1.30pm. The driver of the van was taken to Mayo General Hospital as a precaution but did not sustain any serious injuries.
The road was closed to facilitate Garda Forensic Collision Investigators but was opened at approximately 9pm.
An inquest into Mr Wright’s death was opened yesterday (Monday) but was subsequently adjourned until December.
Mr Wright’s death brings the total number of fatalities on Mayo roads to eight so far this year.
The Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and would like to hear from anyone who was travelling on the R331 between Hollymount and Claremorris between 1pm and 1.30pm on Sunday.
