Gardaí in Ballina are investigating the circumstances of a hit and run incident in the town yesterday (Monday) evening in which a member of the force was struck by a car.
The incident took place at the junction of Bury Street and Kevin Barry Street in Ballina shortly before 6pm yesterday.
A garda sergeant based in the town was injured in the incident.
The garda sergeant was taken by ambulance from the scene to Mayo General Hospital where he was being assessed and treated last night.
While the full extent of his injuries were unknown at the time of going to print, his condition was not described as life threatening.
The garda was on routine foot patrol with a colleague at the time of incident.
A garda spokesperson said they are treating the incident ‘very seriously’ and are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. They expressed their thanks to those who have already come forward to offer witness statements.
The car involved in the incident left the scene and gardaí were still trying to locate it at the time of The Mayo News going to print last night.
