Ballintubber unable to halt Corofin march to Connacht crown

THERE were ‘no complaints’ from Ballintubber joint manager Peter Ford after Sunday’s Connacht Club SFC Final defeat, as he admitted ‘there wasn’t much we could do’ after Corofin upped the ante during the third quarter.
The Mayo champions were only three points behind at the interval (0-7 to 0-4), but by the 43rd minute Corofin had opened up a twelve points lead and were out of reach.
“We were well beaten, we’ve no complaints,” Ford told The Mayo News.
“I suppose we thought we’d half a chance at half-time when we were only three points down, we were lucky to be three points down, but in the first ten or fifteen minutes of the second half they just changed gears and once they pulled ahead of us there wasn’t much we could do.
“They just had too much pace for us on the day, too good in too many positions. A lot of our lads tried their best but we never looked like winning the game really.
“They just seemed to be an awful lot quicker, an awful lot sharper. I don’t know what you could put that down to, maybe they are just that good. Certainly we prepared well and we thought we had a great chance, but it just didn’t happen for us.”
Ballintubber had beaten the 2013 All-Ireland club champions, St Brigid’s, in the recent provincial semi-final and also took down the 2014 All-Ireland runners-up, Castlebar Mitchels, in the Mayo County Final.
However, Corofin were operating at a different level on the day.
“They’ve serious pace,” said Ford. “Their ball skills are really good as well. They rarely make mistakes. They were attacking us from everywhere.
“There were just problems coming from all over the pitch. It was hard to stem the tide.”
