MAYO Mountain Rescue were called to rescue two climbers who both suffered leg injuries on Croagh Patrick in recent days.
A German tourist was airlifted to hospital yesterday afternoon after he fell at the cone section of Croagh Patrick at approximately 2.40pm. Mayo Mountain Rescue (MMR) were called to assist the casualty and the rescue helicopter from Sligo was also deployed.
The man who is in his 60’s suffered a leg injury below the knee in the fall but it is understood he did not suffer any serious head injuries. At approximately 4pm he was airlifted off the mountain and transferred to Mayo General Hospital.
The first callout of the weekend occurred on Friday, June 13 when the MMR received a report of a female who sustained a fall also at the cone of the Reek. The rescue team was deployed and the casualty was stretchered to the shoulder of the mountain and airlifted onto the rescue helicopter. The female who is in her 60’s was transferred to Sligo General Hospital where she was treated for an ankle injury.
Meanwhile, a woman who was rescued by the Achill Coast Guard on May 30 at Keem Bay following a fall has thanked the coast guard for the rescue. Jacqueline Carolon from London sustained a broken leg when she fell while descending from the signal tower at Keem Bay and wrote to the Coast Guard thanking them for their efforts.
“I would like to thank everybody involved in my rescue. I am so grateful for the assistance and help you gave me. You’ll be pleased to hear I am now recovering from a broken leg, at home in London England. My leg was operated on the following day in Castlebar Hospital. I remember doing a lot of screaming, and talked lots of rubbish, whilst being taken down the hill. (It was a mountain to me). So a big big thank you, to all involved, and hopefully when I’m next in Achill I will say thank you in person,” she wrote.
