PLANS to redevelop Ballina Harbour were welcomed by the outgoing Town Council at their final meeting last week.
The plans for the redevelopment of Ballina Harbour at the Quay Road were brought to the council by Town Architect Kevin Keegan and he explained to the council that eight submissions had been received in relation to the redevelopment. Mr Keegan detailed the submissions and outlined a reply to each of the submissions received which were accepted by the council.
Cllr Willie Nolan (FF) said the redevelopment was important for the ‘marine tourism’ of the harbour district, adding that he had learned that money was being sought for the initial Phase One work. Cllr Nolan proposed the the council agree to the redevelopment, which was seconded by Cllr Mark Winters, who said the redevelopment could be a ‘business and tourism hub’.
“It has huge potential and the river is our biggest asset,” said Cllr Peter Clarke (Ind).
Replying to one concern regarding potential hazards of a viewing platform, Town Architect Kevin Keegan said the viewing platform could accommodate ‘boats of all sizes’. The council was told that Senior Executive Engineer Eddie Munnelly had sought funding for the application and that the application had been shortlisted.
