Agreement has been reached in principal for the purchase of one of Connemara’s real landmark properties, Peacocks of Maam Cross, which has been in receivership over the past four years. A long standing and successful business, given its strategic location, literally at the crossroads for all of Connemara, on the N59 Clifden – Galway road, it was completely upgraded in 1999, with then Taoiseach Bertie Ahern performing the opening ceremony.
However, like many similar businesses, it suffered in the recession but both the hotel and craft shop are due to be up and running again soon, under new ownership, possibly as early as June. The Maam Cross Mart will continue to trade as normal on an adjacent site.
