An Taoiseach Enda Kenny recently launched the programme of events for Fleadh Cheoil Chonnacht 2014, which will be held in Castlebar for the first time this July.
A week-long series of events has been organised to coincide with the Fleadh, starting on Monday, June 30 and continuing until the following Sunday night, July 6. Among the many events planned for the week are an illustrated talk in the Library on researching the rural music tradition in Co Mayo by Alan Morrisroe, an Intercultural evening in the Welcome Inn Hotel, a Street pageant in conjunction with the Mayo Arts Squad, an indoor céilí on the Saturday night and an outdoor céilí on the Sunday night.
Comhaltas are joining forces with the Croí ChaisleΡn an Bharraigh street festival on Saturday,  July 5, with what promises to an action-filled day of activities. The fleadh organising committee is holding a busking competition on that day, with a prize fund of €1000. There will be a youth session in An Spórtlann on Thursday, July 3, and an Oíche Gaeilge agus AmhrΡnaíochta on Wednesday, July 2 in the Tennis Club. Aifreann na Fleidhe will come from the Church of the Holy Rosary on Saturday, July 5 and 7pm.
Fleadh competitions take centre stage on Saturday and Sunday, July 5 and 6, and the venues are Davitt College, Scoil Raifteirí and GMIT. Ceol, Gaeilge and AmhrΡnaíocht will be staged in Davitt College and Scoil Raifteirí, while the dancing will take place in GMIT.
MΡirtín G Ó Maicín, Chairman of Coiste na Fléidhe, is looking forward to the Connacht Fleadh coming to Castlebar for the first time. “It will be a huge boost to the town bringing all that is best of the music, song and dance of Connacht to the halls and streets of Castlebar. It will be a welcome boost to the economic, social and cultural  life of the town,” he said.
