Mayo rescuers from the Boyne Fisherman’s Rescue and Recovery Service Western Division recovered the body of Armagh fisherman Daryl Burke on April 6. The fisherman’s body was recovered after the small boat he was on with two friends sank in rough weather in Lough Ree, Co Westmeath last month.
One of the rescuers, Foxford man Micheal Costello said he and the other five rescuers wished to extend their sympathy to the family of Mr Burke. The rescue team were involved for most of the lengthy search of Lough Ree and made the discovery on April 6 after the search had been scaled down.
The western division of the Boyne Fisherman’s Rescue and Recovery Service was established three years ago and has been involved in multiple rescues. The men from the Foxford, Ballina and Castlebar areas work in the western division on a voluntary basis.
Mr Costello explained that the western division was set up in order to aid their east coast colleagues who are based in Drogheda.
“When they need help we go across to them, and vice versa,” said Costello.
At the March meeting of Ballina Town Council, Mayor Johnnie O’Malley proposed sympathy to Craigavon Borough Council on the death of the second fisherman David Warnock, a relation of deputy mayor of the Craigavon Burough Council, Colin McCusker.
