Funding for the construction of a watermain from Ballinrobe to Kilmaine at a cost of €2,025,000 has been awarded by Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan. The Lough Mask Regional Water Supply Scheme extension will be funded as part of the Water Services Investment Programme 2010-13.
Speaking to The Mayo News about the announcement, Cllr Patsy O’Brien (Fine Gael) said the extension will provide a ‘dependable’ source of water for the village.
“While it’s not an immediate concern, there is a lot of leaking in the current setup, and money has been found for Ballymartin, Doorath and Tullyduff areas of Kilmaine,” explained O’Brien.
Cllr O’Brien said the proposed conservation project will streamline the water supply and will be a ‘better job in the long-term’. “This project has been kicked around since 1987, and it’s good to see it has come to a finality.”
Commenting on the scheme, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said, “The extension of the Lough Mask Regional Water Supply Scheme to Kilmaine represents a welcome investment that will support economic growth in the area as well as improve water quality in the locality’.
