THREE secondary schools in Mayo will play host to the ‘Cycle Against Suicide’ event which started yesterday (Monday). The initiative started by Irish entrepreneur, Jim Breen, will be stopping off at St Joseph’s Secondary School, Castlebar, and Ballinrobe Community School next Sunday, April 28 and St Mary’s Secondary School, Ballina on April 29.
The main objective of the cycle is to raise awareness of the help and supports that are available for anyone battling depression, self harm, at risk of suicide or those bereaved by suicide. The cycle will run until May 5 next. The event, which came about as a result of Jim Breen’s appearance on RTÉ’s The Secret Millionaire programme, will be welcomed by teachers and students at Ballinrobe Community School this Sunday. Entertainment on the day will be provided by talented local band Quality Street and a student trad group.
Speaking about the event, Deputy Principal Willie Culkeen said up to 200 people are expected at the school on the day.
“It’s [suicide prevention] an issue that really needs to be highlighted. Jim Breen gave an enthusiastic presentation to our students last week and it really brought it into focus,” explained Mr Culkeen, who along with other members of staff will be taking part in a leg of the cycle.
The cyclists taking part in the 14 day event will be stopping in Ballinrobe at 1pm next Sunday and those wishing to attend and support the event are welcome.
Earlier this month students from the school recently raised €528 for St Patrick’s Hospital Foundation who provide mental health services for young adults. Students took part in the national event ‘Walk in My Shoes’ earlier this month.
