Proposed works for footpaths and traffic calming measures would greatly benefit Mulranny and its link-up with the Greenway. That was what Director of Services with Mayo County Council Martin Keating said at a Belmullet Electoral Area meeting last week.
Mr Keating commented on the proposed part eight planning scheme for the village after Project Engineer Pat Staunton presented the proposed works to councillors and council staff.
The proposed scheme will see the filling of footpaths from the church in the village to past Doherty’s supermarket. Mr Staunton told the meeting that depending on current negotiations with landowners, similar works would commence on paths and traffic calming measures from the church to the Mulranny Park Hotel. Developing a steep section of the Greenway entering the village is also set to be addressed in order to make a safer gradient for people entering the village and also for the safety of the people in Mulranny.
After the presentation Cllr Michael McNamara proposed that the issue of the works in Mulranny would be on all area meeting agendas from now until the works are complete.
“This is essential for the village and I hope everybody comes on board,” concluded Cllr McNamara. Meeting Cathaoirleach. Cllr Michael Holmes noted that the volume of people coming through the village was ‘huge’ due to the access and success of the Greenway and said the onus was on the councillors and staff to fast forward the scheme ‘in case a serious accident happens’.
Plans for the works are on display in Mulranny Post Office, Castlebar council offices and Belmullet Civic Centre. The closing date for submissions from the public is April 23, next.
