Architect Travis Price to give lecture in Westport
American architect and philosopher Travis Price will be giving a lecture about his work in Ireland and Internationally this coming Sunday evening, February 10, at 7.30pm in the Wyatt Hotel, Westport. Although based in Washington, Travis is no stranger to Mayo, having designed and constructed, with his students, five ‘Spirit of Place’ architectural installations in north Mayo: ‘Thin Places’ at Anagh Head, Doonamoe, two shrines dedicated to the those lost at sea; ‘Vault of Heaven’ at Scotts Port – a shrine processional dedicated to the children of Erris; ‘The Children of Lir’ at Carrowteige – sculpted land representing the Irish tale; and ‘Temple of the Tides’ – a small reflection chapel dedicated to the ‘emerging Irish’. This summer, Price and his team of both American and Irish architectural students will be constructing his next Spirit of Place installation in Mayo. Located on the island of InishTurk, it will commemorate ‘The Gathering’ of 2013 and represent those that have left the island, and Ireland generally, as well as those that returned this year for the national event. Price’s award-winning book, ‘The Archaeology of Tomorrow – Architecture and the Spirit of Place’, follows the architect’s quest for the mythic modern while offering inspiration for a reinvigorated architecture of the 21st century. During Price’s career, which spans more than three decades, he has produced numerous large-scale award-winning private and public works, including the world’s largest solar building. He has also planned new town developments, and designed an array of stunning individual residences, commercial properties and institutional monuments. His talk in Westport will be of interest not just to architects, but also to artists, creative thinkers, and those interested in heritage, history, archaeology and the environment.
The Travis Price lecture is sponsored by Mayo County Council and the DOELG Government Policy on Architecture and forms part of the Mayo Gathering Celebrations 2013. Admission is free.
