Westport Leisure Park in conjunction with The Mayo News, Westport Smarter Travel and The Mayo Sports Partnership have really captured the imagination of the local community in recent weeks with Operation Transformation. Over 300 people have registered and are weighing-in each Monday at Westport Leisure Park. This programme is running over an eight week period in tandem with RTE’s Operation Transformation television programme, and is helping people transform their lifestyle. After week one, a collective weight loss of 33 stone was recorded. The biggest losers of the week were Niamh Bourke (female category) a loss of 11lbs; Noel Conlon (male category) lost 13lbs while of the five leaders, Martin Halpin recorded a 9lb loss. Saturday afternoon saw the ‘hi-viz’ brigade in motion as part of the national walk through the grounds of Westport House and onto the Greenway – a total of 6.2km. The walk was led by Minister for Sport and Tourism Michael Ring and Olympic Silver Medallist John Treacy, together with the five local leaders Cllr Tereasa McGuire, Martin Halpin, Francis Hogan, Sinéad Lambert-Barrosa and Rhona McDaid. A series of walks/jogs/runs continues each week from Westport Leisure Park, these events will be open to everyone to come along and join in. Sessions are as follows: Monday and Thursday evening at 7pm; Tuesday morning at 11am and every Saturday afternoon a family activity takes place in an effort to get the whole family out there enjoying the great outdoors. The key event at the end of the programme will be The Westport Operation Transformation 5k on Saturday, February 23. This 5k walk/run/jog is confined to people who have registered for the programme and are weighing-in each week. As part of Westport Leisure Park’s Operation Transformation, here are some helpful hints from nutritionist Fiona Moran. “There is more to weight loss than calories in and calories out. Nutrients are essential for metabolism while blood sugar control is also essential to help in charge of the regulation of hormones,” says Fiona.
