A Westport farmer is calling on dog owners to keep their dogs inside at night after sheep were attacked and killed last week.
Four lambs were killed on Wednesday evening in a field in Ballyglass, Clogher, outside Westport, when they were mauled by two collie dogs. The two dogs, which were later put down, had been seen the day before attacking and injuring sheep in the same area.
The farmer affected by the sheep kill, who did not wish to be named, told The Mayo News that the lambs were cut up and torn during the attack. He is calling on dog owners to ensure their animals are secure at night.
“Sheep are usually attacked by more than two dogs. While a dog can seem timid on its own, anything can happen if a group of dogs get together at night.
“Owners should keep their dogs in at night and not allow them to roam. It is disheartening for farmers to get up in the morning and find their sheep killed by dogs that have been let out at night.”
