Community Centre for Westport’s Quay gets go-ahead

THE Quay area of Westport is to finally get a Community Centre of its own after contract documents for the building were signed last week. The project has been over three years in the making and residents and businesses of the Quay area have been lauded for their pro-active approach towards the project from the outset.
Town Clerk Ann Moore informed last week’s meeting of Westport Town Council that the signing of contracts was due to take place as the contractors had been appointed. Mountain View Securities from Castlebar had put in the lowest bid and had been chosen. The project would cost in the region of €700,000. The sod turning at the site in the Quay is down to take place on Friday next, July 20 at 3.30pm.
Cathaoirleach of the Council, Cllr Ollie Gannon, said all the work put in by the sitting councillors to get the project to this stage should be acknowledged, and he included former councillor Declan Dever in this praise.
Cllr Myles Staunton has long been an advocate of the project and he expressed his delight that the contracts were now to be signed.
“This type of facility does not come about by accident but has come about due to a lot of hard work over the last three years.  I was delighted to be part of a very active committee which has achieved a significant goal which will benefit the Quay area for many years to come. 
“It is fantastic to see it now happen in practice and in my view this is a perfect example of the council working with the residents to come up with something very beneficial to the community.  In my view, this is really what politics should be about.”
Cllr Brendan Mulroy said it was great to see €700,000 being invested in the Quay while Cllr Margaret Adams encouraged all the residents of the Quay to turn up to the sod turning and make it a day of celebration.
Cllr Keith Martin said Westport already had two top of the range community facilities at Sharkey Hill and McConville Park and this would no doubt be another great community facility for the town.
