Newport student’s cloth makes the cut

Twenty-two-year-old fashion student SiobhΡn Moran from Newport has reached the final of The Persil Irish Fashion Awards 2012. SiobhΡn, who graduated from Westport’s Sacred Heart Secondary school in 2008, is one of eight finalists to be in with a chance to win a stylish €10,000.
The competition is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the young, aspiring fashion designer   to make her mark in today’s competitive fashion industry.
Ms Moran is in her final year of fashion in Dublin’s National College of Art and Design, and she is delighted to have secured a place in this final. She will battle it out against five other NCAD students and two from Limerick School of Art & Design.
When asked about why she chose fashion as a career, she revealed that her talent with cloth was handed down like a well-cut suit from one generation to the next. “My family and ancestors are a great inspiration to me. My great-grandfather was a tailor in the town of Belmullet … and my great-aunt became a dressmaker, so fashion design is definitely in our blood.”
Ms Moran’s favourit designers include Caroline Herrera, Victoria Beckham and Vera Wang. “I love Beckham’s timeless, sophisticated cut, tailoring, and body-conscious fits, and Wang’s interest in silhouette and a passion for the sheer and textural.”
The eight finalist’s outfits, all of which have a sport theme, will be showcased in selected Dunnes Stores during April/May 2012. The entries will be judged by celebrated Irish fashion designer Peter O’Brien, as well as TV3 Xposé’s Glenda Gilson and Anna Fahy from Dunnes Stores.
