Ballinrobe Mass brawlers remain in jail

Four men arrested and charged with offences under the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act arising out of last month’s chaotic scenes at a Confirmation service in Ballinrobe remain in jail this week.
The four men appeared before Harristown District Court in Castlerea last Friday. One man was remanded in custody while three others were granted bail with conditions including that they stay out of Ballinrobe. However, they didn’t agree to the conditions and remain in jail. They are due to appear before the same court this Friday.
A brawl erupted at the end of a Confirmation service for 97 local children in St Mary’s Church, Ballinrobe on Tuesday, February 28 last as a result of an ongoing Traveller family feud. In footage seen by The Mayo News, a slash hook and a hurl are among the weapons which were produced during the brawl.
Following an early-morning raid at Bog Road, Ballinrobe the following Friday, four men were arrested, all charged under the Public Order Act and the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act. At the following weekend’s Masses in Ballinrobe, Parish Priest Fr Conal Eustace read out an apology on behalf of the Sweeney family, Bog Road, Ballinrobe.
