THOUSANDS of outdoor enthusiasts have already enjoyed the natural amphitheatre that is the Great Western Greenway since its opening last year. Now, the Greenway Sculpture Project will add to this panoramic palette    that has inspired artists and writers for centuries.
Organisers of this project are now calling on sculptors to make applications to participate in  this exhibition, which will run over the summer months until October next.
The aim of this unusual project is to show the very best contemporary sculpture in the dramatic setting of the Greenway, which runs for 42km along the route of the disused railway line from Westport to Achill. The Great Western Greenway runs along the eastern and northern shores of Clew Bay and through the villages of Newport, Mulranny. 
Artists are invited to submit both existing and proposed works, which must be suitable for safe exhibition in an outdoor setting. Works will be selected by a panel appointed by the organisers which will include practicing artists.
“I believe this will be one of the biggest exhibition spaces in the country. The fact that the pieces do not need to be site specific – that is relate to the area in which they are situated – gives applicants lots of scope for their entries,” said organiser John McHugh, of the Custom House Studios, Westport.
The closing date to submit entries for the Greenway Artists Sculpture Project is March 30 next.
Each entry costs €10, or €20 for three. Completed entries should be sent to: Greenway Sculpture Project, Greenway Artists Initiative, Georges Street, Newport.The initiative is supported by Mayo County Council, Westport Town Council, FΡilte Ireland, Custom House Studios, Greenway Artists Initiative, Newport Tourism, and Mulranny Tourism.
