Tyrone football trio to take on pinnacle challenge

All-Ireland winning Tyrone footballers take the pinnacle challenge


TYRONE GAA footballers Stephen O’ Neill, Enda McGinley and John Devine have their eyes set on the goal but this time it’s off the pitch, as they hit the peaks of Croagh Patrick for the Westport Sea2Summit – one of the country’s leading Adventure Races, which takes place on Saturday, November 12.
Renowned for their GAA skills, the legendary footballers will take on the pinnacle challenge, while raising money for their chosen charity – the Marie Curie Cancer Care, which provides end of life care to terminally ill patients in their own homes, or in one of their nine hospices.
“With the inter-county football season complete until next year, it’s the ideal way to say focused and keep fit. It’s certainly a different challenge to a game of football but having spoken with Paul O’Brien, Race Director of the Westport Sea2Summit, he has guided us in selecting the correct race category and devised a straight-forward training plan. Of course, we are also delighted to raise much-needed funds for the Marie Curie Cancer Care services,” commented Enda McGinley.
Thrill-seeking sports enthusiasts of all fitness levels will take part in the challenge, set amid the breathtaking scenery of Croagh Patrick and the backdrop of Clew Bay. The Sea2Summit pushes a participant’s limits to the extreme with a mix of road running, cycling and mountain hiking.
“It’s a completely different challenge for us and the legs will be very tired at the end. It can take a wee bit of time to get used to that, especially for the three of us who have never really done this sort of thing,” said Stephen O’Neill.
As the last Adventure Race of the season, an unforgettable post race bash is planned including a celebratory prize giving ceremony for participants, their family and friends at the bustling resort and race HQ of the Westport Plaza & Castlecourt Hotel Resort.
