THE first candidate to be officially nominated to contest the Presidential election in October, Michael D Higgins from Galway, will be the guest speaker at the opening of Ballinrobe Community Garden this Tuesday morning, July 5 at 10.30am. The former Labour Party TD for Galway West was chosen by his party at a selection convention in Dublin two weeks. Mayo Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony will preside at the official opening. Michelle Walsh, a member of the organising committee says the opening also coincides with the launch of the “Unemployed in Ballinrobe” booklet which was recently published for the local area. “As Tacú have recently moved premises we are inviting all present to come back to see the new facility on Main Street for some refreshments after. The Garden is located at the back of Ballinrobe Church. It has been a very successful venture to date and has facilitated a horticultural training course since March.” The talk by Michael D Higgins will be his first in Mayo since receiving the nomination. His wife Sabina is a native of Cloonraine, Ballindine. The election will be held in October.
