Fianna Fail’s Frank Chambers has named Easter Monday as the day of his N5 protest walk.
Protest walk on Easter Monday
Anton McNulty
Election candidate Cllr Frank Chambers has confirmed that the protest walk he is organising along the N5 road, aimed at highlighting the slow progress on its upgrade, will take place on Easter Monday, April 9. Speaking at the launch of his election campaign, Cllr Chambers said that he was making the delivery of the new N5 road between Castlebar and Westport his number one priority and wanted the Government to give a timeframe of investment for it. He said the purpose of the protest walk, which will leave Westport for Castlebar at 1pm, is to highlight the ‘appalling state of the current road’ and to ‘move the project forward at a quicker rate’. He said he believes the public fully supports him. “It is unbelievable the support I have received from right around the county. We have waited long enough for this project to be moved forward and I want the message to go back to Minister Cullen that the people of west Mayo will not wait any longer. “This is the busiest stretch of road in Mayo and I want a clear and honest timescale from Minister Cullen on when this project will be delivered. I will not accept promises, I want this timescale written in stone and I want this road to be delivered now,” said Cllr Chambers. As well as making the N5 his top priority, Cllr Chambers also said he would work to deliver a ring road to connect the N5 and N59 and also committed himself to the completion of the Western Rail Corridor to Sligo.
