Judge recommends Balla gunman be medically assessed

Judge recommends Balla gunman be medically assessed


A 47-year-old man with an address in Mayo Abbey has appeared in court this morning charged in relation to the shooting of a woman in a supermarket in Balla on last Tuesday afternoon.
Vincent O’Donnell with an address at Knocknabrone, Mayo Abbey appeared before a sitting of Ballina District Court charged with assault causing serious harm to Dympna Walshe from Balla, who was working in the Costcutter Store in Balla at the time of the shooting.
Mr O'Donnell entered the supermarket on Tuesday evening at around 6.30pm and shot employee Ms Walshe in both legs. It is believed that he knew Ms Walshe.
The victim was taken to Mayo General Hospital where she is still being treated for her injuries, which are described as non life threatening.
Mr O'Donnell was later at arrested shortly after 8pm in Mayo Abbey, which is roughly three miles from Balla, and has been detained at Castlebar Garda Station since the incident for questioning.
Judge Mary Devins recommended at today’s sitting that Mr O'Donnell be medically assessed and he was remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court, Castlerea, on June 10.
