Four people rescued off Reek
Four people were rescued off Croagh Patrick on Saturday in what was a busy day for rescue services. Mayo Mountain Rescue had to assist three people while a fourth person was treated at the scene by a doctor. A middle aged woman from Mayo was taken to hospital by ambulance with a suspected lower leg fracture. Mayo Mountain Rescue were called at 7pm by Gardaí to assist the lady who was halfway up the mountain. She was assisted some of the way down but when her other leg gave way, she had to be carried down on a stretcher before being brought to hospital. Another man was treated for lower leg injuries but they were not as severe. A third person, a man from Mayo, was treated by Mayo Mountain Rescue for a wrist injury but didn’t require hospital treatment whilst a fourth person was treated at the bottom of the mountain by a doctor. “There seems to be a lot of leg injuries lately. There is a high volume of people climbing the mountain this year and people do seem to have problems with keeping their footing. We would appeal to people climbing the mountain to take care and make sure to wear proper footwear,” said Dick Harnedy, PRO of Mayo Mountain Rescue.
