Admission and car parking is free and the Airports retail shop will be opened to the public. Joe Gilmore, Managing Director, Ireland West Airport Knock said, “We are delighted to be the first Airport in Europe to be opening our doors to the general public, in what promises to be a fun filled evening for all the family. We look forward to welcoming a big crowd to the airport.” On the night there will be up to 40 per cent off downtown prices on aftershave and perfume. Products available are Clinique Skincare, Smashbox Make Up, Urban Decay and a host of leading aftershave and perfume brands such as, Jean Paul Gaultier, Calvin Klein, Dior giving shoppers the chance to stock up on their favourite brands at low prices. The ‘Airport Open Evening’ for the public will be the first of its kind in Europe. Donal Healy, Sales and Marketing Manager of Ireland West Airport Knock told The Mayo News that alcohol prices will also be brought down especially for the night and even though they are not a duty free airport they will be significantly cheaper than usual. “The airport opens from 7am to 7pm so we couldn’t have the open airport before this... members of the public have been asking for this for quite some time so we decided to open it,” Mr Healy said. There will be a selection of clothing for adults and kids, traditional Irish giftware designer handbags and kids’ toys. Mid West Radio will be broadcasting live from the airport between 8pm and 10pm on the evening with live interviews and competitions. To mark the occasion the first 25 people into the retail shop to spend €50 or more will be entered into a draw to win a sun holiday for two in any one of the destinations on the Ireland West Airport Knock destination list including; Lanzarote, Barcelona and the Algarve. The draw will take place live on radio where one shopper will walk away with a dream holiday. There will also be free tours of the Air Traffic Control Tower for kids and adults alike where members of the public can get behind the scenes and get a view of how the air traffic controllers make each and every flight land smoothly, and if you’re lucky you might see a couple of planes take off and land on the runway as well. The evening kicks off at 7pm on Friday, August 13 and the airport will remain open till 10pm with refreshments served throughout the evening.
