THE physicality and scoring prowess of Bree Hession was instrumental during the whole championship and on the day that matters most she produced once again.

Afterwards, she spoke to The Mayo News about the journey which took the women in blue all the way to senior football.

“I'm so proud of the girls because we deserve it,” Hession said, standing on her field of dreams at MacHale Park: “The amount of work we've put in, the past three years really, it's just been a build in progress. It has been a huge collective effort. So many people deserve praise from our underage coaches, even our school coaches, and of course, we couldn't do it without the 20, 26 girls on the panel.”

Hession claims, the defeat to MacHale Rovers in the league final earlier this year might have helped them get over the line on Sunday.

“It's nearly good in one way that we lost because you go back to training and you have to reset and look at where things went wrong. We brought a desire to win today that mainly got us over the line.”

It was an extra special day for Claremorris manager Johnny Cummins. He didn't just guide the team to their historic first intermediate title, he had his twin daughters, Aishlin and Amy, on the team.

“It's a dream come true for us all to win a county final. You can see the support here. They've been brilliant. To see so many people here with smiles on their faces, it's brilliant.”

Cummins hailed his team's resilience: “We got an awful bad start. But the girls didn't drop their heads. They kept going. The second half, MacHale Rovers came back at us again. They got a brilliant goal there and still the girls kept at it.”

MacHale Rovers players were understandably disappointed after the match. Annie Gough commented: “We put it in all year. We've been flat out training and today we just couldn't get over the line.

Not for lack of trying, but it just wasn't to be today. We just couldn't quite pin them in from the kick out.”
