Mayo GAA two-point saga throws next weekend's quarter-final into doubt as Hollymount Carramore take next step

BREAKING - Next step taken in Mayo GAA's two-point saga

Mayo GAA's two-point saga set to rumble on

IT'S expected that Mayo GAA's ongoing two-point saga will continue this week after Hollymount Carramore brought the issue to the attention of the Connacht Council this afternoon. The St Coman's Park club have appealed Friday night's ruling by Mayo GAA which dismissed their objection to the result of their championship match with Kilmaine.

Hollymount Carramore's objection stated that referee Declan Corcoran recorded a score in error during the match in Garrymore.

The incident occurred just before half-time when Kilmaine's Kevin Mullin kicked the ball between the posts. The referee recorded a two-point score, but Mayo GAA TV footage suggest the kick was taken from inside the two-point arc and should have resulted in one point being added to the Kilmaine total instead of two.

The match ended in a draw which saw Kilmaine advance to the quarter-finals and Hollymount Carramore exit the championship. After the match concluded Mr Corcoran submitted his referee's report stating that the match had indeed ended in a draw. However, he also emailed Mayo GAA stating that he had made a mistake and should not have counted Mullin's shot as a two-pointer.

Subsequently Hollymount Carramore's objection to the result was heard at a meeting of Mayo's Competitions Control Committee on Friday night. They argued that the score was incorrectly recorded and they should have won the game by a point. Kilmaine countered by arguing that the referee's report said the game ended in a draw.

After Friday night's meeting Mayo GAA issued a statement saying the objection had not been upheld. “We are satisfied that the score he (Declan Corcoran) allowed was recorded properly in accordance with rule 7.5 n (ii).”

This afternoon, Hollymount Carramore appealed that decision to Connacht GAA. It's expected that hearing will be held tomorrow night (Tuesday) or Wednesday. It's then expected that the issue may be taken before Croke Park authorities and end up in front of the GAA's DRA (Disputes Resolution Authority).

Kilmaine are scheduled to face Kilmeena in the Intermediate Championship quarter-final on Saturday afternoon. Whether that game goes ahead as planned remains to be seen.
