Mayo's good fortune in hardball just keeps on coming, as a proud Aughagower man put on an exceptional show to bring home the title of national champion on Sunday.

Aughagower clubman Shane Heraty displayed sparkling form at the event in Croke Park, where he usurped the reigning champion Myles Carroll of Kildare.

Heraty was in fine fettle on the day and won the first round 21-13. Carroll responded well to tie it up with an 11-21 showing, but a final round of 1105 was enough to bring the title back home to the West.

The win also ended somewhat of a drought for the county, with the last time a Mayo man taking the title home with them coming all the way back in 2008 when Ballaghaderreen's Joe McCann won big.

The weekend before, he and partner Lorcan Conlon came up short in the All-Ireland Junior Doubles final, but Heraty made up for the disappointment of that loss with an impressive victory.
