"WHETHER players are 18 or 33, if they're good enough we want them playing for Mayo." That was the answer delivered by new Mayo senior manager Andy Moran when he spoke to the media after being ratified by club delegates at tonight's meeting of Mayo County Board in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park.
Moran was asked whether star forward Cillian O'Connor was in his plans. The Ballintubber sharp-shooter stepped away from inter-county football last season. The new manager said he had spoken to O'Connor and a number of other players in the past few days and nobody had ruled themselves out of contention.
"I've experienced both ends of the age spectrum. In my last few years with Mayo all people seemed to talk about at times was what age myself and Alan Dillon were. In my view, all that matters is how well someone is playing. At the other end of the scale, many Mayo footballers played their best between the ages of 18 and 21, so how can anyone say a lad is too young if he's good enough. What Colm (Boyle), Paddy (Tally) and I are looking for are the best players and age doesn't come into it."
Moran was ratified at a meeting of club delegates where representatives welcomed the appointment of the Ballaghaderreen clubman and his coaches Tally and Boyle.
