Breaffy brush off Charlestown challenge to get back on winning track

Mayo Senior Football League: Robbie Fadden penalty crucial in overcoming winless Charlestown

Breaffy beat Charlestown

Mayo Senior Football League 1A - Round 7

Charlestown Sarsfields 0-12

Breaffy 1-12

In Charlestown

IT was hard work but Breaffy got the job done in Father O'Hara Park on Saturday night. Charlestown Sarsfields proved a stiff challenge in their quest for a first league win, but understrength Breaffy showed resilience and cleverness to get back on winning track after recording their first defeat two weeks ago against Castlebar Mitchels.

In mostly mild summer conditions, the guests started the game with the foot on the gas pedal.

After ten minutes, Sean Deane's men had kicked four points while the home side had failed to register. Breaffy's early lead helped by a superb two-pointer from open play by Joe Mellett.

However, Charlestown came to life. The men in green were inspired by Paul Towey and Matthew Lenehan and powered back to balance the scores at 0-5 apiece at the end of the first half.

Charlestown had the better start into the second period and there were loud cheers, when Mayo attacker Towey scored a brilliant two-point free as Sarsfields took the lead for the first time in the match.

Towey hit another free three minutes later to extend the lead to two points.

But Breaffy struck back. Substitute Jude Lavin was brought down by Charlestown goalkeeper Kenneth Brennan and Robbie Fadden expertly drilled the subsequent penalty to the net with a hard and low finish.

Breaffy had retaken the lead and wouldn't relinquish it for the rest of the evening.

A full match report will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
