THERE will be no question about who ex-Mayo attacker Conor Mortimer will be cheering on from the stands tonight when his old side DCU lock horns with UCD in the Sigerson Cup decider at the Connacht Centre of Excellence.

The Shrule-Glencorrib man has been here before and knows how momentous the game is in terms of college life.

A Sigerson final is a huge game and a huge achievement. You’re in college with these guys, going on nights out with these guys. It’s a different energy,” he explained, noting the huge amount of counties involved in tonight's decider.

Players from a whopping 13 different counties featured in UCD's semi-final win while 2020 winners DCU have pulled a similarly gifted team together from all corners of the country.

Both teams are hopping on the bus and traveling West. It’ll be on a knife edge given the game earlier in the competition when there was little or nothing between the teams.”

Mortimer shot the lights out for the Northsiders 19 years ago in this very competition.

Aged 23, he notched 0-4 as DCU captured their maiden crown in the competition alongside the likes of Stephen Cluxton and Bernard Brogan when they defeated Ulster University in the final.

On the eve of the 2025 final, he spoke highly of his time with the students.

For us in our Sigerson at that time in 2006, we won the game and were all together for a great night out,” he stated.

Given my DCU affinity, I’ll be shouting for them when the action begins.”

The game throws in this evening (Wednesday) at 7.30pm in The Connacht Centre of Excellence and will be refereed by Tyrone's Sean Hurson who was the man in the middle in both the 2022 and 2024 All-Ireland senior finals.
