Mayo U-21 A Championship semi-final
Westport 2-13 Davitts 1-8
In Westport
The result was never in doubt in this semi-final, largely thanks to Westport goalkeeper Conor Meaney, who had a fantastic day out. In the first half, he saved a penalty, and in the second, Meaney masterfully blocked two Davitts' efforts, denying them a potential comeback.
The other standout performer was Westport midfielder Conal Dawson. He showcased his whole range in a man-of-the-match performance where he intercepted kick-outs, dispossessed opponents, scored, and showed sublime kick-passing.
Dawson put five points on the board, as well as sending a beautiful pass directly into the path of Cian Mulchrone, who raised the green flag for the first time.
Westport added another goal before half-time when Darragh Hoban got on the end of a collective effort that began by stealing the Davitts kick out and bringing the ball forward at lightning speed, where an unmarked Hoban sent it home to give the west Mayo side a comfortable 2-8 to 1-4 lead after 30 minutes.
Dylan Gallagher scored Davitt's goal as Westport kept the border boys at arm's length to cruise into the final.
A full match report will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
