CONNACHT LGFA SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL

Westport 2-10 Eoghan Rua 1-11

In Westport

WESTPORT have booked a date with one of the greatest ladies club teams of all time after seeing off a battling Eoghan Rua side in Westport this afternoon.

Despite wasting several great goal and point chances, Pop Geraghty’s women made history thanks to two late efforts from 17-year-old Christina McEvilly and their inspirational midfielder Aoife Geraghty.

The West Mayo women enjoyed a handsome share of possession in front of one of the biggest crowds to witness women’s football in Westport.

However, a failure to convert their chances left Eoghan Rua in contention for the entire game.

A cracking goal from Fionnuala McLaughlin in the 15th minute was cancelled out by a green flag from the excellent Leah Duffy early in the second half.

Westport fell two points behind after wasting numerous opportunities but got back in front when Laura Moran crashed home a goal after a spellbinding kick-pass from Aoife Staunton.

Eoghan Rua levelled the game twice in the last ten minutes with frees from Keeva Flynn, but Westport found the wherewithal in injury time to crown yet another historic victory.

The Mayo champions will meet reigning All-Ireland, Connacht and Galway champions Kilkerrin-Clonberne in the Connacht LGFA Senior Club Championship Final.

A full report, plus reaction from Westport’s Janette O’Malley, Aoife Geraghty and Pop Geraghty will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
