Shairoze Akram from Ballaghaderreen will face off with Ballintubber's Jason Gibbons this Saturday in the senior championship quarter-final
Ballaghaderreen v Ballintubber
Saturday, September 28, 4pm, Ballaghaderreen
On paper this is the hardest quarter-final to predict. A serious case can be made for either of them appearing in the semi-final and which one will continue in the race remains to be seen. Ballaghaderreen are unbeaten after two wins and a draw while Ballintubber literally sneaked through in the dying moments of the group stages. Shairoze Akram, David McBrien, Kuba Callaghan, David Drake and Cian Hanley have stood up to the plate and are leading Tomas Morley’s men impressively, but they’ll be tested to the limit by the men from the shadow of the abbey.
Jason Gibbons, one of the finest Mayo midfielders of his generation is back in the middle for the men in red. Cillian O’Connor kicked classy scores against Kilmeena and as usual, Ballintubber’s collective is even greater than the sum of their impressive parts.
Ballaghadereen have been written off all season, yet find themselves 60 minutes from the semi-finals. They are certainly good enough to win this one. However, if Ballintubber get rolling they’ll be hard stopped and could just sneak it.
VERDICT: BALLINTUBBER
