Double delight: Breaffy Rounders celebrate two senior titles in Dublin
What am impressive season for Breaffy Rounders. Last Sunday the club had three All-Ireland finals in one day, bringing home two titles.
The ladies team crowned a year for the ages while the mixed team made it a day of double celebrations. The ladies marched unbeaten into the final, with their toughest challenge coming in the semi-final. Breaffy showed great resilience in securing a dramatic win with a final run as daylight faded.
The All-Ireland decider proved to be bit less dramatic. The Breaffy ladies started with a fairly dominant performance. They got off to an early lead and held opponents Glynn Barntown scoreless for four innings. However, Barntown weren't in the final to make up the numbers and came back into the game. However Breaffy wouldn't let their advantage slip and came out on top with a 13-5 win.
The Breaffy mixed team followed with a shot at the only title missing from their trophy cabinet. As expected this was always going to be a tug of war, and so it proved with no more than a couple of runs between the teams all the way to the sixth inning. Breaffy fielded first and after taking an early lead let Limekiln catch up. The Dubliners held a slender lead for a good portion of the game, that was until the sixth when Breaffy had a mighty inninning with the bat, they left Limekiln needing three to tie it up. Breaffy's fielding stepped up and they took three out in a row to close the game out.
However, Breaffy just missed out on their aim of to completing an historic triple in one day. The men's team lost to an Erne Eagles outfit, that had beaten Breaffy in the first game of the season and they proved to be too much in the final as well. On another day it might have been a different story, but Eagles' batting was the difference. Breaffy's batting wasn't as decisive and while they were valiant in the field, Eagles managed to find the gaps and put on enough runs to make the difference, to win the title 16–9.
