Mayo LGFA Senior Football Championship Round 2
Kilmovee 0-11 Westport 5-12
In Kilmovee
WESTPORT overcame a slow start to unleash their true potential and dismiss Kilmovee by sixteen points this morning.
Through superior firepower, pace and physicality, Pop Geraghty’s women all but guaranteed their place in the county semi-final while Kilmovee will need to beat Carnacon next week to have a chance of making the top two in the group.
Where Westport could exploit half a team of intercounty players, Kilmovee depended on the Cafferky sisters for every single one of their scores.
The elder Cafferky, Lisa, caused them plenty of hassle in the early stages.
But once she was double-teamed by Nicola O’Malley and a sweeper and Saoirse Lally was given a licence to play ball, Westport really began to dominate.
The West Mayo women were actually two points behind before Aoife Staunton crashed a half-shot into the net in the 22nd minute.
Laura Moran added a second goal with a brilliant finish three minutes later, setting the stage for a second half-shootout in which Westport pulled well out of site.
Last year’s county finalists produced some stunning moves, with the highlight being Aoife Staunton’s 32nd minute goal.
Kilmovee could barely get their hands on the ball at times for the rest of the game, which ended with two bangs when Laura Moran and Sherin El Massry shook the net to rubber-stamp a fine display.
A full report plus reaction from Westport’s Saoirse Lally will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
