In Kilmeena

A historic night for Kilmeena ended with a heart-breaking defeat when Mayo footballer Fergal Boland dropped an inspirational winning score from 45 metres out to secure victory for Aghamore in the depths of injury time.

Kilmeena had given a great display in their first-ever home championship game as a senior team, but let a six-point lead slip to spoil what would have been a fairytale ending.

In addition, they also lost their discipline and finished the game with 13 men after captain John Ryan and Liam Moore were black-carded late in the game.

The west Mayo men took the game to the visitors from early on, opening up a three-point lead in the opening ten minutes, during which Adam Byrne in the Aghamore goal got a strong hand to a shot from Caolach Halligan.

Fergal Boland had a penalty saved by Paul Groden before scores from Halligan, Liam Moore and Keith Joyce gave Kilmeena a four-point lead at the break.

Kilmeena looked secure after Darragh Keaveney scored their tenth point in the 42nd minute. That was before corner forwards Liam Lavin and Darren Duffy stepped up to the plate and almost single-handedly dragged their teammates back into the game.

Boland stepped up and sealed the deal after getting on the end of a short pass from an Adam Byrne free and driving it over the bar to break Kilmeena hearts.
