Championship favourites Westport made it two wins from two after a ten-point victory over a dogged Mayo Gaels side this weekend.

An early clash of heads between Lee Keegan and Peter Gallagher brought the game to a short standstill, but it was Westport that led 0-6 0-2 after 20 minutes.

The home side kicked on and gained a six-point advantage, but great play down the middle opened up a goal chance for Mayo Gaels and captain Ethan Henry made no mistake with his finish.

Fantastic forward play by the Moran brothers caused havoc for the ‘Gaels defence. They trailed 0-11 to 1-4 at the break.

Man of the match, Colm Moran, opened the scoring in the second half but up the other end, Ethan Henry raised his second green flag and it was level.

In the 48th minute, substitute and joint-captain, Oisin Mc Laughlin drove a low powerful shot into the net, with Mark Moran setting up his brother, Colm for a goal a minute later.

Good scores from brothers, Adam and John Gallagher kept the scoreboard ticking over but it was Westport who turned it on as they finished strong with a goal from Mayo footballer Eoghan Mc Laughlin putting the nail in Mayo Gaels’ coffin.

Both Mayo Gaels and Balla are winless after two rounds and will now face each other in a fortnight’s time in a battle to avoid the relegation play-offs.

A full match report plus reaction will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
