An understrength Mayo Gaels were humbled at home this evening as Westport secured a facile away win to top Division 1B of the Mayo Senior Football League.

Westport's seventh win of the league campaign sees them go into the knockout stages with an undefeated record in league football in 2024.

Even though their Division 1B status was already secured, it was a dismal night for Mayo Gaels, who scored one point in the second half and an own goal just before the half-time whistle.

Even without big hitters like Lee Keegan and Eoghan McLaughlin, the Covies were 1-6 to 0-3 up after 15 minutes.

The goals from Finbar McLaughlin and Ronan Geraghty put the contest to bed by the 26th minute.

The hosts were caught out in defence on several occasions, most notably when they gave the ball away in their own half only to see Killian Kilkelly direct a shot into the onrushing Mayo Gaels goalkeeper, Brian Mannion, who directed the ball into his net to leave the scores at 3-7 to 0-4 at half-time.

It didn't get much better after the break, with Westport actually missing more goal chances than they converted.

Luckily for the Gaels, Westport's only green flag came from Mayo defender Rory Brickendedn in the 50th minute, shortly before Conor Burke was put off for after a yellow card offence on top of a previous black card dismissal.
