In Aghamore
KILMEENA suffered their fourth league defeat on the trot to senior opposition as Aghamore came out on top in a game that ebbed and flowed like the on-off wind and rain in which this contest was played.
The return of each teams' Mayo U-20 panellists was a big factor, with Tom O'Flaherty and Liam Moore putting in particularly eye-catching displays.
Though a young Kilmeena team had more possession in the first half and scored a fine goal from John McGlynn, John Reilly's team were never able to gain the upper-hand.
Good showings from Aghamore's O'Flaherty, Michael McNeive and Seán Óg Tigue put the hosts into a 0-6 1-2 lead at the break.
O'Flaherty pointed less than 30 seconds into the second half before Kilmeena knocked over points from Darragh Slattery and the ever-impressive Caolach Halligan to make it a one-point game again.
The West Mayo men went five behind again when Seán Óg Tigue pointed before Michael McNieve knocked in a goal after a poor kick-out from Kilmeena's Paul Groden.
Their response was ideal, with the visitors knocking over five on the bounce.
However, Aghamore soon edged back in front and went five up in the last ten minutes when Tom O'Flaherty assisted James Lyons to palm in a goal from a yard out.
A green flag from Liam Moore set up an exciting finish, but Aghamore clung unflinchingly to their lead and saw it out by two points.
A full report, plus reaction from Aghamore's Brendan Harrison, will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
