MAYO have been dealt a major setback following confirmation that Paddy Durcan has suffered a cruciate ligament injury.
Mayo GAA confirmed the news this afternoon following a medical assessment, which will likely rule the Castlebar Mitchels half-back out for the rest of the season.
The former All-Star incurred the injury as the full-time whistle was blown in Mayo’s championship win over Cavan at the weekend.
Durcan, who missed the Connacht final defeat to Galway due to injury, came on as a substitute against Cavan.
Mayo manager Kevin McStay described the development as ‘very disappointing news for Paddy and for everyone involved in Mayo GAA’.
“He is a valued player who also exhibits outstanding leadership capabilities. We will all support and rally around him in his recovery,” McStay said.
“Paddy will remain our captain and a vital member of our squad, where he will continue to lead and inspire us. We look forward to his return to the playing field.”
The 29-year-old has made 108 appearances for Mayo since making his senior debut in 2015, scoring 1-77 in all competitions.
Mayo are due to take on Roscommon in Dr Hyde in the next round of the All-Ireland Series.
