Kevin McStay issues call to arms to Mayo supporters for Connacht final

Mayo manager calls on ‘subdued’ Mayo fans to turn out in big numbers in Salthill for provincial final against Galway

MODERN intercounty managers are forever playing down ‘the hype’.

In a reversal of the much-maligned practice, Kevin McStay has issued a call to arms to the people of Mayo.

In his latest unprompted message to be shoehorned into a post-match press conference, the Mayo manager called for a show of force against the old enemy in the Connacht final.

“If we come out of that as the champions, well then we’ve a massive opening position in the round robin and if we come out number two we’re still in a pretty decent position. It’s not fatal or anything but we want to win it,” began McStay.

That’s all well and good, says you.

“Even our fans need to understand what winning the Connacht means as well. There’s a lot of young players that need that support. We didn’t hear it today for whatever reason, it was a bit subdued we felt.”

That last sentence caught our attention.

“We really want our supporters to come out now in big numbers for this final against Galway,” McStay continued. “It’s a significant moment for the group. It really is a significant moment for the group.”

Was Kevin McStay disappointed with the 13,967 attendance?

“No, I think we were all a bit cautious. Mayo Inc. was a bit cautious,” replied McStay, coining a new term.

“The players, maybe management was cautious, the way we went about it. I felt the crowd never, never just got to where we know they can get to when they’re back. We’re a new group, we’ve moved on from where they were ten years ago. This is another iteration of Mayo and we want to get that support, we have to earn it, we understand that. We’re in the final now, let’s see where it brings us.”

The army man turned General of The Subdued covered all bases by reiterating his cri de coeur in a video for Mayo GAA’s social media.

As his troops feasted inside a local hotel, General McStay said: “I really believe that the Mayo roar, the Mayo support, is going to mean an awful lot to us in Salthill in a fortnight’s time so I’m asking everybody to do their very best to get behind them.”

Mayo Inc is on the march to Salthill.
